How to stop yo-yo dieting
So you’re overweight or obese? Wait – no, first of all don’t define yourself by your weight. We need to stop the negative talk around body image and concentrate on what’s really important, our health.
Scientifically, we know it’s very hard for most people to maintain weight loss after a diet. We also need to help the next generation so that they don’t inherit our obsession with weight and shape. Instead, the focus should be on health and activity. Obesity and eating disorders can have serious consequences for our children and young people, and the situation is getting worse… Often, we have an unhealthy relationship with food, like yo-yo dieting, which we can easily pass on to our children as ‘normal’. Food is our fuel, essential to life and health. It’s also one of life’s pleasures to be enjoyed – but eat to live first, don’t live to eat!
The Ireland Obesity Plan (2016) tells us that 6 out of 10 Irish adults are overweight or obese. This rises to 3 out of 4 in the over-50s. Of course we know it’s bad for us to be overweight, but it can be hard to change habits. The array of calorific (and delicious) foods that we have displayed at every turn doesn’t help! Add to this a sedentary lifestyle and all too often it’s a cycle of yo-yo dieting and weight regain.
So what do we do?
We need to think differently to really turn the tide on obesity… change daily habits to make a ‘new normal’ of a healthier lifestyle. Many other countries have done this, such as Spain and Iceland, so why not us? Think: how would you do it in your own life?
If you’ve read this far and are still having negative thoughts about your own weight management, please think again. There’s no shame in starting afresh, we’ve only one life on this earth so we might as well live our best one!
Find your new habits and routine by taking a long, hard look at your lifestyle. Now, be prepared to make changes for good…. Not just to get to a number on the scale but a real improvement to let yourself get more out of life.
